This just in from New
England Regional Director, SCBWI, via John Prophet:
|
| the online
magazine WEE ONES has hired a new poetry editor, Kim Hutmacher.
She's active in SCBWI's Illinois region. The WEE ONES submission
guidelines page says: |

| we are accepting
poetry to fill each issue. |
|
| available months.
Poems must be well written |
|
| roll off the
tongue. Kim Hutmacher says, "I would love |
|
| written about in
a fresh, fun way! I also enjoy different forms of poetry and hope to
share a nice mix with Wee Ones’ readers. Along with traditional
rhyme, don’t be afraid to send haiku, acrostic, limericks, or to
explore simile and metaphor, etc." |

Join us this afternoon
in the AUDITORIUM-Scheduled Events Room for an "Open Forum" with Web
Editor Mel Boring. Mel has published some 25 magazine articles and
stories, as well as eight books for the young readers market. He
taught writing for 18 years, while being home husband and parent to
two of his four children, and doing his own writing. He welcomes
your questions on time management, getting started, writer's block,
marketing, writing rights, writing earnings, or anything else you'd
like to discuss. Bring your QUESTIONS to this open forum-in five
minutes.
|
| mel

The Tuesday afternoon
"Open Forum" will begin promptly at 4 Atlantic/CANADA, 3 p.m.
Eastern, 2 p.m. Central, 1 p.m. Mountain, and noon Pacific. While
you wait for the "Open Forum" to start, feel free to use your ASK A
QUESTION button RIGHT BETWEEN THE YELLOW "MAP" AND THE RED QUESTION
MARK IN ICHAT to post some questions for the discussion group-two
minutes from now.
|
| mel

Good afternoon! Welcome
to this Tuesday afternoon's "Open Forum" session. I'm your
moderator, Mel Boring, and the Web Editor for this site. We're back
for an informal time of answering any questions you might like to
ask, on any subject. So feel free to ask what's on your mind--and
I'll tell you what's on mine! First, please read these
announcements, then we'll get started….
|
| mel
boring |
IMPORTANT INSTRUCTIONS:
Send questions you'd like answered or discussed by using your "Ask a
Question" icon/button. (It looks like a thought bubble icon, RIGHT
NEXT TO THE RED QUESTION MARK.) The moderator (me, Mel Boring) will
post the questions one at a time in the chat room and do my best to
answer them. Also note: If you want to make it possible to ask the
longest question you can, first type "/ask" (without the quotation
marks), then leave one space after the end of "ask", then type as
many characters of your question as you can. If your question is not
complete, send the second part next, then if necessary the third,
etc…
|
| mel
boring |
WARNING: If you don't
post anything at all, SOME of you will be bounced off the system in
15 minutes. TO PREVENT THIS, type something (either a question to
the moderator or even a private message) every 15 minutes to stay
active and remain online.

First the GOOD NEWS,
one item, but it is BIG!...
|
| mel

Donna Marie West has
done it AGAIN, with this GOOD NEWS this week, for the FOURTH WEEK IN
A ROW: Well I don't know what I've been doing right lately but I
have ANOTHER GOOD NEWS! I just sold "The Bed Bug" to STORY FRIENDS.
This is the second publication for this short story as it appeared
in OUR LITTLE FRIEND in 2003. Have a good week (I
am!)

| mel

CONGRATULATIONS, Donna
Marie West--WHAT a TRACK RECORD!...

I think your writing

FABULOUS!!! WAY TO WRITE RIGHT!

Here's the FIRST and a
most important question, from omalizzie!...
|

has anyone else had

YES, I have, said Mel!

NOW you can get in, and
I'm SORRY, omalizzie and others, for the

This just in from the

She's active in SCBWI's Illinois region. The WEE ONES submission
guidelines page says: |
|
| we are accepting
poetry to fill each issue. Please check below for the available

This means that "you've
got a friend in the poety business,"...
|
| mel

because Kim Hutmacher
has published articles on our ICL Web Site!...
|
| mel
boring |
She is so GOOD at
poetry, so submit your GOOD poetry to Kim!...
|
| mel
boring |
But make sure it's
GOOD, because editors tell me...
|
| mel
boring |
they receive a LOT of
BAD poetry, forced rhyming, no natural rhythym, stiffish, and just
plain rhyming by writers....
|
| mel
boring |
who think that just
because they can come up with a word that rhymes with another one
before it,...
|
| mel
boring |
it's poetry, but mostly
it's doggerel!...
|
| mel
boring |
Here's a place to see
some GOOD poetry: On the inside front cover of each HIGHLIGHTS
Magazine--they pick one of the BEST!

caq has this good
follow-up question: Thursday, Mary Casanova said she has two rhyming
dictionaries. Can you
|
| Here are Mary's
answers from the transcript of her chat: |
|
| dictionaries: THE
COMPLETE RHYMING DICTIONARY (1992) by Clement Wood, and the
SCHOLASTIC RHYMING DICTIONARY (1997) by Sue Young, each of which is
available in paperback for about eight dollars from
http://www.amazon.com. There is an online rhyming dictionary at
http://www.rhymezone.com/ at the RhymeZone Web Site, where you can
find rhyming words of a certain number of syllables as well. There
is another simpler online rhyming dictionary on the WriteExpress Web
Site, at http://www.writeexpress.com/online2.html |
|
| mel

I'll make sure these
titles and such come out clearly in the transcript! And THANKS for
asking, caq!

Chitra Soundar KINDly
sent us this information about book packagers: Many people often
wonder about what book packagers do. As a SCBWI Assistant Advisor, I
was asked this question this week again. Here are the articles I
sent to the member.
|
| creat books for
publishers. Here are some interesting articles on this part of the
industry: |

THANK YOU so MUCH,

Singapore.
|
| mel

Again, people have
asked about the HIGHLIGHTS FOR CHILDREN "Wish List," and Helen
Henderson was SO kind to send us that Wish List, which we've posted
here previously. If you want to get a copy of that HIGHLIGHTS Wish
List, send an e-mail to George Brown, who is an editor at the
magazine. His e-mail address is:

Here is a question
about HIGHLIGHTS from arnalda:...
|
| mel
boring |
arnalda e-mailed to
ask: Do you know to whom should I submit poems to at HIGHLIGHTS FOR
CHILDREN?
|
| mel
boring |
I suggest you submit
your poems to just the Poetry Editor at HIGHLIGHTS,
arnalda....
|
| mel
boring |
They don't HAVE a
particular poetry editor--ALL their editors look at
it,...
|
| mel
boring |
but if you address the
"Poetry Editor," they will know JUST how to direct your submissions!
We'll be looking for you on their inside front cover,
friend!
|
| leone |
How do you switch between
past and present tense without confusing readers?
|
| mel
boring |
GOOD question, leone!
Actually, a story or a book is usually kept in ONE main tense,
usually PAST TENSE but sometimes PRESENT TENSE....
|
| mel
boring |
When you DO switch, say
from the present the story/novel is happening in, to the past when
something of significance happened,...
|
| mel
boring |
it's called a
flashback. And it's very important to go into any flashback CLEARLY,
letting readers know you are referring to what's already happened in
the flashback...
|
| mel
boring |
Then it's just as
important to come OUT of a flashback--keep them short!--clearly,
letting readers know you're returning to when the story IS
happening....
|
| mel
boring |
But you would NOT
switch tenses as in writing:...
|
| mel
boring |
Jennica turned the
corner and started for her house. Then she sees her best
friend....
|
| mel
boring |
The mixture of the PAST
tense "turned" and the PRESENT tense "sees" is not
done....
|
| mel
boring |
If you were going into
a flashback, however, you might do it like this:...
|
| mel
boring |
Jennica was just
turning into her driveway when that horrible accident from two years
ago came back to her....
|
| mel
boring |
Then you would go into
what happened in the PAST in the accident
flashback....
|
| mel
boring |
At the END of the
flashback, to come back to the present time the story is taking
place in,...
|
| mel
boring |
you might
write:...
|
| mel
boring |
"Come right in the
house, Jennica!" called her mother, jerking her back to the
now.

I know it always seems
forever till they FINALLY schedule your submission, doesn't
it!...
|
| mel

However, I've known a
piece of mine to take FIVE YEARS to get into CRICKET MAGAZINE, so
yours happened pretty fast....
|
| mel

Do I remember that you
just sold them that manuscript about a year ago last
spring?

wee ones was my very

CONGRATULATIONS,

Mel, I have more good
news, I just heard (about an hour ago) from publicity person at my
publisher and they'll be sending my book and a press release to the
top 100 newspapers in the country. This is all so new to me, and
very exciting!
|
| mel
boring |
Dell has a picture book
out, and NOW this GOOD NEWS!!!...
|
| mel
boring |
CONGRATULATIONS, Dell!
That is so exciting--and for US here, too!...
|
| mel
boring |
It sounds like your
publisher is doing WELL at promotion, Dell!...
|
| mel
boring |
SOMEtimes, even "big
publishers" fall down in promotion,...
|
| mel
boring |
and THAT is what will
make your book GO!!! We wish you WELLER THAN WELL, our
friend!
|
| caq |
I would just suggest that
you all look at WVStorytellers post in the General discussion board.
It is so funny. It is titled Read it and laugh.
|
| mel
boring |
I will look at that
after the forum, thanks for the tipoff, caq! Now here's a lengthy
question from caq. I'll try to get it all viewably on the
screen!...
|
| caq |
I submitted a story to
Read, part of the Weekly Reader ...
|
| caq |
family. Saturday I
received Freelance Writer’s Guidelines..
|
| caq |
from Know Your World
Extra, another part of the Weekly ...
|
| caq |
Reader family. I have
never sent anything to Know ...
|
| caq |
Your World Extra. In the
upper left hand corner of this...
|
| caq |
paper there is
handwriting. It says: Thank you for your ...
|
| caq |
interest. Feel free to
email me any questions or pitches....
|
| caq |
Then I was given the
email address and it was signed, ...
|
| caq |
Jeff Ives, Associate
Editor. Could the Read part of ...
|
| caq |
Weekly Reader have sent
my story to Know Your World ...
|
| caq |
Extra (different age
group) and Jeff Ives have liked my ...
|
| caq |
writing style or just
sent him a note about it? I have ...
|
| caq |
heard neither acceptance
nor rejection on my submission...
|
| caq |
to Read. I do have an
article I can adjust to fit Know ..
|
| caq |
Your World Extra and
intend to do just that. Sorry for ...
|
| caq |
the lengthy question, but
that is what happened.
|
| mel
boring |
Yes, I think you're
absolutely right, caq!...
|
| mel
boring |
Your submission was
passed on to KNOW YOUR WORLD EXTRA,...
|
| mel
boring |
and Jeff Ives saw
something he really liked in your writing!...
|
| mel
boring |
So DO RIGHT AWAY submit
something else to KNOW YOUR WORLD EXTRA, because the WEEKLY READER
family is VERY prestigious publishing, friend! ...
|
| mel
boring |
And let us know what
happens when you submit to Jeff Ives, OK?
|
| arnalda |
Ha! Thanks,
Mel!
|
| mel
boring |
You are WARMLY WELCOME,
arnalda--you are ALWAYS such a cheerful bright
spot!

Canada?
|
| mel

I wish I were, monkee!
THANKS for asking, and I'll pass on anyone's message who wants to
go!
|
| dell |
Mel, I guess this is for
reviews and inclusion in gift-giving guides, etc.
|
| mel
boring |
Yes, it is, Dell, and
notifying the newspapers is for a...
|
| mel
boring |
general coverage of the
country with news of your new book....
|
| mel

Local merchants will
know of your book, and be able to stock it,...
|

and parents will know
of it, too, and be able to buy it.

Hi Mel, Has anyone
received the new 2006 ICL market book yet
|
| mel
boring |
No, ccollier, I haven't
yet...
|
| mel
boring |
And you'd think because
I'm a "B" that I'd be early,...
|
| mel
boring |
even earlier than you
"Cs," ccollier!...
|
| mel
boring |
Has ANYone received
their 2006 ICL Market Books yet, the magazine or the books book? Let
me know, if so,
|
| mel
boring |
and I'll let others
know it's on the way!
|
| razberry |
Are Animals
ok.?
|
| mel
boring |
razberry, ANIMALS are
about the BEST ONE TOPIC you can write about for
chidren!...
|
| mel
boring |
Things like dinosaurs,
and like hula hoops, and like bungee cords, come and
go...
|
| mel
boring |
but ANIMALS are here to
stay!...
|
| mel
boring |
MORE magazine and book
publishers are interested in animal topics than ANY OTHER TOPIC,
friend. So write for it!
|
| dianna |
a dinosaur using a hoola
hoop while dangling from a bungee
cord?..........hmmm
|
| mel
boring |
What a GREAT idea,
dianna!!! Write for it!
|
| mel
boring |
Here
|
| mel
boring |
is some GOOD WISDOM
about verb tense, which we talked about earlier, from
casey:...
|
| casey |
when my story was
accepted by BTP for Summer Shorts, the editor wanted me to change it
to present tense. I'd never written in present tense before so it
was a learning experience.
|
| mel
boring |
It was Judy Blume who
pretty much FIRST popularized PRESENT tense writing, in
the...
|
| mel
boring |
1960s. Before that,
there were a few, but Judy made a specialty of it, and a VERY
SUCCESSFUL one!
|
| mel
boring |
INTERESTING insight,
casey, THANKS for sharing that!
|
| ccollier |
Thanks Mel, I see the
news ones are advertised online!
|
| mel
boring |
OOPS, now why didn't I
think to look there, on our OWN Web Site! GOOFY ME!
|
| mel
boring |
Thanks,
ccollier!
|
| mel
boring |
I want to share a
personal experience from when I was in Salt Lake City, Utah at a
conference of the League of Utah Writers in
September:...
|
| mel
boring |
While there, I met only
the SECOND chatster from this Web Site that I've ever met, Becky
Crum....
|
| mel
boring |
Becky has published on
our ICL Web Site, and now we've met, and become good
friends....
|
| mel
boring |
What I didn't realize
was that dianna--who is here TODAY--was at or near the conference at
the Hilton in SLC...
|
| mel
boring |
She was at a Sci-Fi
Writers Conference. I ALMOST got to meet dianna, and how I WISHED I
had seen her, and met her!....
|
| mel
boring |
"Moral of this
story":..
|
| mel
boring |
If I ever come near
where you live, I would LOVE to meet you, friend, so DO flag me down
if you see me! And dianna, I'll be back in SLC someday, and I will
make it a POINT to meet you, friend!

GS asked some time ago,
the original question that brought about our discussion of
historical fiction last week: How much "fact" do you need to have in
historical fiction? I wanted to do an article on Calamity Jane
helping with the smallpox epidemic in Deadwood in 1878 but could not
find enough information to do the nonfiction article. In the
CHILDREN'S WRITER Newsletter it tells of writing historical fiction.
I now want to do a story about Calamity Jane and a child she
befriended that had smallpox. There isn't much about that part of
her life, only a line or two. Enough for a lead, but not the
article. What do you suggest?
|
| mel
boring |
Here is what I suggest,
GS:...
|
| mel
boring |
If you DIG HARD ENOUGH,
LONG ENOUGH, AND IN ENOUGH PLACES,...
|
| mel
boring |
you CAN come up with
more info about Calamity Jane and that Deadwood smallpox
epidemic....
|
| mel
boring |
I have found that NO
subject, no matter how LITTLE material there is about it, can't be
researched.....
|
| mel
boring |
If you go to libraries
BIG and SMALL, go to COLORADO if you can,....
|
| mel
boring |
and SEARCH like you
were searching for gold, you WILL FIND info,
because...
|
| mel
boring |
that event HAPPENED,
GS, and there is BOUND to be more info, maybe old books,
magazines....
|
| mel
boring |
But I suggest you find
the BEST reference librarian at the biggest university library you
can,...
|
| mel
boring |
and ask them to help
you find out about Calamity Jane in the 1878 smallpox
epidemic,...
|
| mel
boring |
because it's OUT THERE,
friend, it just needs to be found....
|
| mel
boring |
And you wouldn't have
to fictionalize it, because it REALLY HAPPENED, and fact is always
stranger than fiction! So GO FOR IT, GS!
|
| mel
boring |
VLP needs to know: I
was wondering when you want to submit a query to a certain
publisher, but they are asking for clips with the query, is it
alright to include a paragraph or two of your article if you do not
have any clips?
|
| mel
boring |
I wouldn't include a
paragraph or two of the article, VLP,...
|
| mel
boring |
but I would give them a
"teaser" from your article....
|
| mel
boring |
And in ONLY one
paragraph. Here's a for instance:...
|
| mel
boring |
In one paragraph of a
query letter, I might write (and prolly the FIRST
paragraph)...
|
| mel
boring |
"In 1878, only 29
people died of smallpox in Cripple Creek,
Colorado,...
|
| mel
boring |
but 1674 cows and 5639
chickens and 5643 pigs dies of the smallpox."...
|
| mel
boring |
Of course, what I've
just written is NOT TRUE,...
|
| mel
boring |
but I would use what
FACTS there ARE to arrest the editor's
attention....
|
| mel
boring |
Then in the second
paragraph I would give the editor some info about the article such
as the age, length, and any other "structural"
characteristics...
|
| mel
boring |
Then in the THIRD and
LAST paragraph, ask the editor if they would like to see the
complete article.
|
| mel
boring |
I hope this helps, VLP,
but what I'm trying to show is that the...
|
| mel
boring |
QUERY is CRUCIAL! You
may never get a chance to show your article if the query doesn't
arrest the editor. So ROUSE that editor, make them BEG to see the
article!
|
| mel
boring |
YA needs to find out: I
am a second year sixth grade teacher at a public school and I am
very interested in writing picture books for children. I wrote a
picture book for a Graduate course, I received an A+. What would be
my first step in order to
|
|
|
| omalizzie |
what is the difference
between a story and an essay?
|
| eggamy |
thanks for highlight
info. mel. Could you please give Cobble
|
| eggamy |
Cobblestone address too
my e-mail hasn't been on I've missed
|
| mel
boring |
WHOOPS, too many at
once!...
|
| mel
boring |
First, omalizzie, a
story has a beginning and an end, a conflict that gets "worser,"
then is resolved....
|
| mel
boring |
An essay is OPINION
about something, not a story....
|
| mel
boring |
In our Writer's News
each week, I write an ESSAY with the title THE WRITE
LIFE....
|
| mel
boring |
THOSE are just MY
feelings, MY opinions, omalizzie....
|
| mel
boring |
But a story has limited
characters, and one main, POV character, who sets about resolving
the conflict, which is done by the end.
|
| mel
boring |
eggamy, the COBBLESTONE
address is:...
|
| mel

Carus Publishing
Company, 140 S. Dearborn #1450, Chicago, IL

|

Writing to COBBLESTONE
in care of that Carus address will get to COBBLESTONE,
eggamy.

MC sent this question:
I recently read an interview of the president of Peru. He has had a
fascinating, rags-to-riches life, and I think it would make a great
children's article or book. How do I appropriately get permission to
use the info and possibly the photos? Could the author and I
collaborate?
|
| mel
boring |
If the information was
published, you don't NEED to ask permission, MC.
...
|
| mel
boring |
You may use the
info--though not copy it word for word---because it is
published....
|
| mel
boring |
If you plan to quote
more than 50 words of a source, then you must get
permission....
|
| mel
boring |
As for the photos, YES,
you do need to ask permission to use them,

The SOURCE of a photo
is usually printed somewhere near it in a "credit line," and that
tells you who to contact....

As for collaboration,
contact the author and ask, it's that simple....
|

And a writer once
contacted me and asked if we could collaborate, and we DID, very
HAPPILY! So go for it, MC!

MC also has this
question: I've written a lot of materials that are good for teaching
ESL. Much of it is action songs. Other teachers in my district use
my units. The kids love them. But breaking into the music world
seems really difficult. Plus, I
|
| concert/have your
own CD-making-studio thing. Any advice |

Get a marketing guide,
like the 2006 CHILDREN"S BOOK MARKET or the CHILDREN"S WRITERS AND
ILLUSTRATORS' MARKET, MC,...
|

and look through it for
the FEW publishers who do music and CDs. They are there, and can be
found!

selling things, MC, but the ICL market guides are

BW wants to ask this
question: If I
|
| sell a story to a
magazine - do I have to declare it as income? Is there a dollar
amount you have to earn before declaring the money |
|
| mel
boring |
Yes, it is income, and
if your full-time job is NOT writing,...
|
| mel
boring |
you just declare it as
extra income, and the publisher will send you the IRS form to use
for that....
|
| mel
boring |
If you DO make your
living as a writer, you not only list the INCOMES, but the
DEDUCTUIONS for expenses, BW. And let us know when you DO sell,
friend!
