Answer 6: All open forums and guest speaker chats take place in the ICL auditorium. The chat is designed to tell you what room you are in when you log in. If you are presently in Room 1, simply type
/go Auditorium
This will put you in the Auditorium where scheduled chats occur.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Answer 9: If you are using Java or Javalite, you may find you get dumped out of chat frequently during special events when you are reading and not posting. You can try logging into special events with html chat -- which is extremely stable -- or simply making a discrete post, like a period, every 15 minutes or so.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Answer 11: Simply make a new one right here. We can't really retrieve them for you, so always right down your username and password for future reference.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Answer 13: First, email me. If someone is misbehaving in chat, I want to know and I want to do something about it. Then, you can simply make the person's comments disappear -- *poof* -- no more bothering. To put someone on "ignore," simply type
/ignore add username
Thus, if you were to desire to ignore someone named bigralph, you would type
/ignore add bigralph
And everything bigralph typed would not appear on your screen, effectively rendering him speechless. If you only want to ignore someone for a short time, you can later remove them from your ignore function by typing this
/ignore remove username
Thus, I could allow bigralph to talk to me again by typing
/ignore remove bigralph

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Answer 14: If you have a group of people you especially like to hang out in chat with, you may want to put them on a "buddy" list so that the chat will let you know as soon as the person logs into chat (even if the person logs into another room.) It's really quite easy to do, simply type:
/buddy add username
This will add the username to your buddy list. You can have lots of buddies. So, if you wanted to add a user named bigralph to your buddy list, you would type:
/buddy add bigralph
And bigralph will be on your list and chat will let you know when he comes online anywhere.
If later, your buddy list becomes over large, you can remove people easily by typing
/buddy remove username
If you're not sure who is on your buddy list, simply type
/buddy list
and the chat software will tell you.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Answer 15:Sometimes you may find yourself logging in to discuss your latest manuscript with your best writing friend, only to discover the chat rooms are bustling with conversation. It is possible to create a private room for discussion works in progress or critiques or similar writing/writing life matters.

On the menu bar across the center of your chat screen, click "private room" (if using HTML chat or java chat). Clear instructions and "fill in the blank" forms will appear at the top of your screen.

If you are using iChat, click the black down-pointing triangle at the far left of the mid-screen menu bar. This will create a drop-down menu of choices. Now slide your mouse over to "commands" and you will find "create private room." Click that and you will get the "create private room" instructions and forms at the top half of your chat screen.
