Dee: When you were a student, what were your hopes as far as writing? Did you see yourself where you are today?

Kristi Holl: Odd you should ask that . . . I've thought about that a lot lately. When I started writing, I did have high hopes, but partly because I didn't know any better. I knew no other writers, I lived on an isolated farm, and I didn't even know there were such things as writers magazines. I think maybe in my case it was a blessing though because I didn't have to read that a publisher had l0,000 submissions last year, or that only 5% of the nation's writers can support their families on their writing, or any of the other discouraging "facts" so bandied about to new writers. I just knew I loved to write and I loved kids and I loved reading, and (though I'm truly not trying to plug the school) I had an instructor who believed in me when everyone (and I do mean EVERYONE) else in my environment thought I should be making more zuchinni recipes. But no, I never envisioned being a web editor then, because there were no such things.
